All connections took flight ...

While you wait for your flight to Miami, here is my complete Miami Art Week / 2019 guide:

By Adriana Lerner, Arrivals Gate founder

When I am in Basel, Switzerland, in June, to cover the largest and most important contemporary art fair in the world, I say I'm at Art Basel.

But during the first week of December, when the winter edition of Art Basel happens in Miami Beach, it is more appropriate to say that I'm in Miami for Art Week. Summing up this true marathon at the Miami Beach Convention Center - Art Basel - is setting aside more than 20 satellite fairs, new exhibitions at the city's museums, visits to impressive private art collections, and incredible installations all over town. Stores of established or emerging brands also participate, launching their partnerships with artists in great events.

Getting a parking space this week is as difficult as getting an Art Basel VIP card - this week's most valuable pass, as it literally opens all the doors of fairs, museums and private collections at special times for free. In an effort to make the numerous art fairs in Miami and Miami Beach more easily accessible, the two cities have joined forces to operate a free shuttle service to the art exhibitions in each city. This guide  will let you plan the week in advance and make the most of your experience - with a sneaker or very comfortable footwear - as this is how the fair regulars are recognized and you will be able to reach the end of the art marathon, Sunday, the 8th.

Want to do the same marathon, but won't be in Miami at this time? Read the guide and follow my Instagram stories daily at @arrivalsgate. It has started already!

The Art Basel Miami Beach is the largest contemporary art fair in North America, with nearly 270 galleries from 33 countries and territories exhibiting works by over 4,000 artists in the renovated Miami Beach Convention Center. Its origin is in Basel, Switzerland, where the fair was founded in 1970 by a trio of Swiss art dealers: Ernst Beyeler, Trudi Bruckner e Balz Hilt.

Held every June, Art Basel attracts about 93 thousand participants at the Messe Basel exhibition space, making it the most important fair of contemporary art in the world. Messe Basel was designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, Pritzker Prize winner. Their work can be seen in Miami at 1111 Lincoln Road, a garage building on the corner of Alton Road and Lincoln Road, PAMM (Perez Art Museum Miami), and more recently the iconic Jade Signature residential building in Sunny Isles Beach .

In its 18th year, Art Basel's Miami Beach edition takes place every December, when the major galleries in North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia show significant work from the masters of modern and contemporary art, as well as the new generation of emerging stars. Paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs are on display in the main exhibition hall.

The fair, with more than 500.000 sq.ft., is divided into spaces, each with its curator : Galleries, New, Position, Edition , Meridians, Survey and the art magazines in Magazines sector. There are also a number of conversations throughout the week, ranging from panels to speeches and specific installations at Collins Park, opposite the Bass Museum called CITIES:

This year, Buenos Aires will present a series of large-scale sculptures by Argentine artists. Curated by Diana Wechsler and Florencia Battiti, the park will receive sculptural works that explore the concepts of context and location, and their potential to interfere with everyday life. The participating artists are Matías Duville, Graciela Hasper, Marie Orensanz, Pablo Reinoso, Marcela Sinclair and Agustina Woodgate.

I have my favorite fair in Basel: Unlimited, which belongs to Art Basel. Apparently it was brought this year to Miami Beach under the name Meridians. Let's visit this new and ambitious new sector.  Curated by Magalí Arriola, the Meridians will present sculptures and large-scale paintings, installations, screenings of films and videos and live performances in the new Grand Ballroom of the Miami Beach Convention Center (MBCC), which has around 60.000 sq. ft. of space and It is directly connected to the main exhibition halls. The new space - the result of MBCC's extensive overhaul - allows Art Basel to introduce a new  sector  that goes beyond the confines of a traditional art fair layout . The Meridians will give the galleries a unique opportunity to present ambitious and  monumental  works  in  the Miami  Beach edition.

Brazilian Artur Lescher (Nara Roesler Gallery) is one of 34 artists selected for the first edition of Meridians with the installation “Rio Maquina” .

To see the daylight and take a rest from the exhausting walking through Art Basel, I suggest a light lunch in the cafe built for the week at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden , right in front of the entrance of the Convention Center and the fair Design Miami.  Enjoy this beautiful garden, designed by the amazing landscaper Raymond Jungles , a pupil of Roberto Burle Marx.

And as Miami Art Week features so much more than what happens inside the convention center, let's look at design, go to the beach for art, see more affordable art fairs, and understand how the city transforms into this special week.

The order is only a suggestion, but it is separated by area / neighborhood to optimize your time in the chaotic traffic.

Design Miami takes place during Art Basel, both in Miami and in Basel, becoming the premier venue for exhibition and discussion of collectible design.

Design Miami is more than a design market, where the world's leading galleries come together to present museum-quality exhibitions of 20th and 21st century furniture, lighting and art objects. The fair builds collaborations with designers and design institutions, panels and lectures featuring big names in the worlds of design, architecture, art and fashion, and unique work by designers and architects, including emerging ones. The highlight of this year's Basel edition was the Studio Mameluca (Ale Clark and Nuno FS) Manimal installation with Mercado Moderno, where giant bird nests filled the Brazilians who passed by with pride.

MIAMI BEACH / Museum

The Bass Museum of Art

2100 Collins Av.

Tickets: $ 15

More information: thebass.org

Housed within a 1930s Art Deco building, The Bass reopened in 2017 after a renovation. Located in Collins Park, it is dedicated to modern art and has some bright new public art acquisitions, including the huge “Miami Mountain” limestone stones painted in neon by Ugo Rondinone in the park and the neon sign “Eternity Now” by Sylvie Fleury on the museum facade.

For the art wee two exhibitions will open and will remain open until April and September 2020, respectively: “Blind Spot” by Lara Favaretto and “Better Nights” by Mickalene Thomas.

Already open: “In the Cone of Uncertainty” by Haegue Yang until April 2020.

MIAMI BEACH / Faena District

Faena District extends north on Collins Avenue from 32-36th Streets, between the beach and Indian Creek. During the art week the programming is extensive, highlighting “The Last Supper”.

Taking the pulpit and the kitchen as its starting points, the Festival postulates that meal or shared prayer is at the heart of social creation and community connectivity. Revealing connections between religious rituals and cultural practices shared, as communion, fasting and offerings ancestors, the " Last Supper " will establish the creation and experience of new rites. Curated by Zoe Lukov, the Festival will include new commissions from Myrlande Constant, Gabriel Chaile and Emeka Ogboh, as well as works by Yael Bartana, Camille Henrot, Zhang Huan and The Propeller Group, among others. A mobile boat with video installation and other works will be in the public places of the hotel. The programs will be free and open to the public

MIAMI BEACH / Installation

Audemars Piguet, Jana Winderen

4-8 December

Collins Park Roundabout

Audemars Piguet brings to Miami Beach the sound installation of Norwegian artist Jana Winde ren, exploring sounds from the ocean and underwater.

The installation is a reiteration of Winderen's presentation “Du Petit Risoud aux Profond eurs du Lac de Joux” in Basel , at the Audemars Piguet show, during Art Basel 2019.

DESIGN DISTRICT

Miami has changed in recent years and the Design District is a great example of this transformation that includes museum, private collections, street art and flagship stores. I recommend visiting the Moore Building and the following shops for their amazing architecture: Thom Browne, Celine, Dolce Gabbana (windows curved glass), Prada ( vintage Brazilian furniture ), Hermes, Loewe.

For lunch or dinner, the outdoor area of the Greek Mandolin Aegean Bistro is as delicious as the food. But this time, without reservation, the wait will be long.  A Happy Hour at Café Dior is the news that opened last year and works only in high season (it will probably reopen sometime in December – to be announced, so it is better to confirm).

The recommendation to visit a garage building seems odd, but it's a must see: The Museum Garage, right across from the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), has a rooftop that deserves a drone selfie, and the facade is a surprise at dusk.
